Here for your perusal is a stunning Slave Population Map. It was made in 1861.

Atlantic States.

Scale ca. 1:2,300,000. Upper map shows Virginia and the surrounding area. Map shows cities, railroads, roads, and points of interest. The lower map shows the entire United States. Lower map shows graphically the political division of the country, showing states as loyal, seceded, and neutral. Map also shows the free and slave population of each state.
